Is it time to put Patrick Cantlay’s picture on milk cartons?
Cantlay, the 2021 FedEx Cup champion has been on a long, extended vacation since the Ryder Cup.
He hasn’t played and hasn’t made any high-profile appearances anywhere — he’s ghosting us.
It’s not that he deserved a long break. Cantlay had a monster season in 2021 winning three times — the Memorial, the BMW and the Tour Championship. Add that FedEx Cup bonus money and he’s no doubt have fun reviewing his current financial statement — and that in and of itself can take sometime.
The 2020-21 PGA Tour “Super Season” is behind us and you don’t have to wait long for the Tour to crank up for 2022. The Tournament of Champions gets underway in two weeks at Kapalua and the tournament is a nice reward for the players who won during said “Super Season.”
Will Cantlay show up in paradise? No word yet but it’s about time for Mr. Straight Face to come out of hibernation. He’s known as the guy who struggles with smiles — Jack Nicklaus told him he needs to smile more. When Tiger Woods was asked if he’d seen Cantlay smile, Tiger quickly said: “Yes, when he beat me at Gin (Rummy).”
One player you can probably count on showing up at Kapalua is defending champion Harris English. The win last year at Kapalua was one of two for English — the second came at The Travelers and English has shown up at some post-season events.
One big name who is a fan of the islands is Collin Morikawa — look for him to show up and perhaps Justin Thomas as the Kapalua course is a great fit for his game with its wide fairways.
No doubt every first-time winner will show as well.
There’s nothing like a tropical vacation with a little golf mixed in — limited field — guaranteed payday.
Doesn’t get much better than that.

It really doesn’t get much better than Kapalua, especially to get back to ‘work’.
One big time Kapalua player who won’t be there despite a big time win this year is Xander — who won a little event known as the Olympics.
Tony should be there. And I would love to see Tony at Sony. Seems like he could rip Waialae a new okole. Pardon my Hawaiian.
