USGA Had No Choice In Wiping Out U.S. Open Qualifiers - Dog Leg News

Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

The usga could have done some sort of qualifying, such as 5o players, one from each of from 50 local qualifying sites. But I am ok with the plan. I appreciate their efforts to make this field similar to last fields, but I also would be ok if they just went down the world rankings list; then they could say if we wanted we could have a stronger field than the pga championship or the Players, the two golfing events with the biggest inferiority complexes.
But the usga doesn’t need to do that. Hopefully this is a one time deal because my daughters are eligible for US women’s open qualifying, as well as other events, so we really look forward to taking part in the democratic process annually.

Baxter, I’m sure you can’t wait to watch your daughters go through qualifying. I played in two local qualifiers when I was a teenager. It was really, really cool, or maybe not, one year it was so hot that by the time we finished 36 holes in one day (that’s what it was back then) I was hit by heat exhaustion.

I wish the usga still did 36 sometimes. It’s folks like Tom— and was it Venturi ?— that cannot hang that ended that practice.
The girls are still young but they have done at least one qualifying for the 4 ball, girls jr am and women’s am respectively.
All are held on great courses and create some amazing memories.
My 11 year old missed an ace by an inch on her first hole of women’s am qualifying last summer in Southern California, so a bunch of people saw it and I got it on tape.
The same day the UCLA coach had to watch her 13 year old sister play every hole because one of the Bruins new recruits was in the group. UCLA is high on her list, basically at the top. The Coach said we can talk after her sophomore season, which is next year. Amazing exposure.
As we were once told, if you are serious, make sure you do usga events. So true.

WOW, UCLA, I’m impressed. She’s obviously got game!

            They can play.
I’m not saying the coach assured anything, she was poker faced all day. And mostly focused on her player.

But I liked what my kid showed despite the setup being long… resilience, short game and so forth.

If they keep developing they both should have a chance at UCLA and who knows beyond that.

Short game is EVERYTHING on EVERY level; Especially putting; Lexi Thompson is so darn long but putts like a pig, if she any semblance of a short game she’d win six events a year. I’m sure your support has a lot to do with your girls’ success; Just let them play…..
