The Muirfield Village Golf Club hasn’t been kind to a lot of big names at The Memorial but Cam Smith handled the tough, re-designed Jack Nicklaus masterpiece and holds the lead heading into the weekend.
Smith shot 69 on Friday and sits at eight-under par, a shot in front of Byron Nelson winner K.H. Lee (67-70) and Denny McCarthy (68-69).
Cameron Young, the top candidate for Rookie Of The Year continued to impress. With rounds of 67-71, he heads a group of five players at six-under that includes Davis Riley (67-71), Jhonny Vegas (69-69), Luke List (67-71) and Billy Horschel (70-68).
Rory McIlroy will heading into moving day just three behind Smith after rounds of 70-69.
Defending champion Patrick Cantlay is five back at three-under (72-69).
Jon Rahm had an interesting day on Friday. He managed an even par round of 72 that included a shanked shot and a thrown club. Ram’s in at two-under par and in need of a big day on Saturday.
Biggest name to miss the cut was world No. 3 Colin Morikawa. He opened with 71 but fell apart on Friday and shot 77 to miss the cut by a shot.
Bryson DeChambeau made his return after hand surgery but he showed a lot of rust. DeChambeau shot 76-77 and finished nine-over and in need of more practice time with the U.S. Open just two weeks away.
