On thing that really stood out last week at the Women’s Open at Carnoustie is that eventual champion Anna Nordqvist is deathly afraid to chip around the greens.
Anytime Nordqvist was anywhere near a green during the championship — she pulled the putter in lieu of trying to chip the ball.
You shouldn’t be afraid to chip — all it takes is some practice and a few good drills and this week ace instructor Matt Fryer has some excellent drills that will help you get a better feel and better execution when it comes to those 10, 15 and 20-yard chips/pitches.
Fryer also makes some interesting use of alignment sticks to help you with your drills.
One thing that stood out is that when you finish, your chest should be pointing at the target, which brings back a Nick Faldo image where he says “Chest-Chest” to get an image of your chest turning way then toward the target.

To be fair Anna said she has been working with Parker McLauclin (probably misspelled) on her short game.
She said after the Open he is teaching her to use the bounce and other things. She still putted a lot which is understandable in links especially; but it’s likely the recent work with what is being considered a short game guru helped her quite a bit around the Carnoustie greens, especially the bunkers.
