It was simply a matter of time.
Ernie Els turned 50 last October and quietly took his game over to the Champions Tour.
Ernie looked like he might get his first win at the Mitsubishi Classic in Hawaii but lost in a playoff.
Sunday he stepped into the winner’s circle out in California.
Els shot a final round 67 at the Newport Beach Country Club and his 16-under par total was good for a two-shot victory over Glen Day, Fred Couples and Robert Karlsson.
Day was 15-under through 17 holes, tied with Els but bogeyed the par five 18th to fall back to 14-under. Els finished in style with a birdie at the closing hole and put together rounds of 66-64-67.
Els won 19 times during his regular PGA Tour career.
