Wednesday marks the third edition of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (the ANWA) — and play begins in the morning at Champions Retreat and the field of 72 players has the immediate goal of making the 36-hole cut.
That’s important because only the low 30 get the privilege and honor of a Friday practice round then the final 18-hole competitive round at the Augusta National Golf Club.
The field has 24 of the top 25 women’s amateur players in the world with Stanford University teammates — Rose Zhang and Rachel Heck — ranked one and two in the world, respectively.
Other Stanford players in the tournament include Aline Krauter, Brooke Seay, Caroline Sturdza and Angelina Ye — basically the entire Stanford team along with high school star Megha Ganne, who will join the Stanford team next fall.
There will be a new champion this year as last year’s winner — Tsubasi Kajultani of Japan, is not competing this week.
Zhang has some unfinished business. She was the overwhelming favorite last year and a triple-bogey eight at the par five 13th cost her a shot at the title. She eventually finished in a tie for third, despite that triple. This will be Zhang’s third appearance in the event. She’s one of 10 players who have appeared in all three ANWAs.
Following Saturday’s final round, Sunday marks the annual Drive, Chip and Putt for national finalists. The event is staged at The Masters practice facility. There are seven players in the ANWA field that competed in it as junior golfers, three won their age divisions.
