Tiger Woods has admitted that he’d love to compete in the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.
The United States will have four players — basically those ranked highest in the Official World Golf Rankings as of June 22.
If the decision were made as of today, Tiger would be on the outside looking in.
With Rory McIlroy ranked No. 1 and Jon Rahm No. 2 — Brooks Koepka is the highest-ranked American followed by Justin Thomas (4), Dustin Johnson (5) and Pat Cantlay (7). Those would be the top four Americans. Patrick Reed is next at No. 8 followed by Webb Simpson at No. 9 then Woods at 10.
It’s obvious that Tiger will have to win somewhere between now and June 22.
Another metric that could come into play is Koepka. Last week Koepka spoke on a podcast and seemed pretty wishy-washy regarding the Olympics. He declared that he is “50-50” when it comes to the summer games.
There’s also the possibility that if Woods is very close, say fifth and Koepka decides to play, would one of the other three give up their spot to Woods, considering that Tiger is 44 and this is most likely his last chance to compete in the Olympic Games.
You know how the television folks feel.
There’s time for Tiger. But he’s going to have to win No. 83 somewhere, anywhere.
The Masters?
