Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

First of all everyone was bouncing off that wall. Brooke even went in the wall and got a free drop.
What Mirim Lee did to win this thing was downright some of the clutchest major golf ever. That cannot be taken away.

The wall was a big topic of conversation at home. It’s an insult to the women’s game. But It’s been that way, the stands have also created a back stop for years.

This backstop at Rancho Mirage is one of the many little things that make some golf fans not respect the women’s game as much as they should.

It’s a great hole. It should be played as intended. No back stops.

It’s like if Augusta added a wall or stands behind the 15th so balls don’t go long into the pond at 16. They seem to have actually added rough to save balls.

The ANA needs to move the stands back back so there is some water behind the green. The course can reshape behind the green to naturally stop more balls. Add some sand. Anything.
But walls gotta go AND stands gotta go back.

Totally agree with your thoughts on the wall AND the stands behind it, what brought up the controversy was no spectators with no spectators, no stands, so why keep a “wall”?

They kept the silly wall for consistency to other years, which has bugged golf fans for years.
Also for sponsorship reasons. ANA pays to have their logo behind 18.

But again if ANA want their major to be fully respected, they would start by getting rid of that wall and those stands blocking the water behind 18.
